Koreans are expected to pay more than W50 trillion this year on household debt interest payments (US$1=W1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],154). There are limits to how much debt a household can shoulder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially when interest rates are skyrocketing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the only solution is to spend less. Shrinking private consumption can cause the economy as a whole to fall into a vicious circle. The household debt problem would compound already bleak economic prospects due to the European fiscal crisis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], increasing the risk of the economy slipping into a rapid downward spiral.
The government urged banks to curb household loans in June,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but people in need of cash turned to subprime institutions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ending up putting a heavier interest burden on households. The government needs to put the household debt problem at the top of its macroeconomic agenda and look for both short- and long-term policies to ease the financial burden on low-income people. Now is not the time for populist measures,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but for effective remedies based on a realistic assessment of the economic situation.

The Good Life, he says, is getting in touch with your strengths, knowing them and crafting your work, love, friendship, leisure and parenting to use these for flow in your life. The Meaningful Life, on the other hand, involves using these strengths in the service of something you believe is larger than you are.

I received many expressions of appreciation. One client I’ve worked for a year who’s been unemployed, for instance. He got a job the week before Christmas, invited back to a former job where he’d been treating poorly; a great affirmation. The staff had welcomed him back, calling it a Christmas miracle, he told me. He said 3 things had pulled him through, one of them being me, his coach. This gives me great satisfaction.
Emotional Intelligence
As we coaches say, “If you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you’ll keep getting what you’ve been getting.” Emotional intelligence is about flexibility, creativity and resilience in the face of change. Make it one of your resolutions this year to develop your EQ. It covers every aspect of your life and contributes much more to your satisfaction and success than your IQ.

One thing that’s hard for perfectionists, and probably for everyone, is that sense of personal failure. If I’d shopped sooner, the shelves wouldn’t have been bare of necessities like white sprinkles and small turkeys. But what would your emotional intelligence coach tell you? To be self-forgiving.
Seligman refers to hedonic motives, pursuing pleasure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enjoyment and comfort, and eudaimonic motives, pursuing personal growth, developing potential,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], achieving personal excellence and contributing to the lives of others. “Eudaimonic pursuits [are] significantly correlated with life satisfactions,” Seligman says, “whereas hedonic pursuits [are] not.”
Reserves apply to all areas of life – rest, money, people. And chaos applies to your best-laid plans. Expect it and be surprised if things go right. Something crucial will break – an oven, a dryer. When I woke up the day before company arrived with no heat, I reminded myself that everything was in order. It didn’t bust my December budget either. Always have reserves!
At the same time, my older son and his family were coming from Dallas to spend a last Christmas in this house. I asked myself many times what my intentions were. To be miserable or to be happy seemed the two alternatives, either giving into the sorrow completely, or stuffing it down and slapping on a happy face. What would an emotionally intelligent person do? She would experience all the emotions as they come and go, feeling the pain, feeling the joy, and having Christmas.
And when the vital red tablecloth was missing, it was time to be flexible and creative. There were other things available in the store. I took it as a challenge to my creativity to reorient and move on.
My intention,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then, was to experience this last Christmas in this house to the fullest. This meant I was able to take my granddaughter to the church Christmas pageant. My son who died used to sing with the San Antonio Boys Choir. He had the voice of an angel. One special memory is the year the Choir accompanied the SA Symphony and Houston Ballet, singing the chorus of the Snowflakes at the end of Act I. I drove a carload of the boys down for rehearsals, and amidst the usual young-boy activities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one of the other of them would start singing the haunting melody. It’s meant for young boy voices. My granddaughter sang it to me in the car on the way to church. Life is bittersweet; emotions are bittersweet. Later during the church service, her shenanigans kept me distracted and in touch with the moment. I was also able to delight in the children who sang,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the children who were alive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so very alive. Life goes on and we go with it. And so do our emotions.
This Christmas was especially joyful for me, and also heart-rending. I was preparing my house to sell. No big deal? As we say in the field, it isn’t what’s happening, it’s what it means to you. This is the home I raised my children in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the childhood home of my son who died, at 21, in 1999. For months I couldn’t touch his room. My coach told me to move to Dallas to be near my surviving son, but how could I? His smell was still in his room. New painting and carpeting removed this last earthly reminder of him, though I suppose it was long gone, and I packed up the things of his I’ve kept, preparing for the move.

Perfectionism is a prescription for misery because we can’t be pleased with ourselves or others. As I cruised the grocery aisles finding some things unavailable, I reminded myself that Christmas dinner didn’t have to be perfect, just “good enough.”
It’s a good time of year to have a strong social network! People who know you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the real you.
Intentionality also means focusing on the task at hand and not being distracted. And Learned Optimism means avoiding the downward spiral. The happy, smiley, ebullient cheerful affect, which psychologist’s call “positive affectivity” is inherited he says, and has a normal distribution. This means about half of us have it, and the rest of us don’t. It is not, therefore, associated with anything but what you’ve been born with. Interesting.
This week after Christmas, I’m busy putting the final touches on my new emotional intelligence programs and ebooks for the New Year. It’s my intent to make EQ available to even more people in the coming year, and continue the outreach to businesses.

As a result, the average life span of Bhutanese people increased by 19 years between 1984 and 1998. Costa Rica in Central America has a GNI of just $6,500. Its roads are reminiscent of Korea back in the 1960s and its buildings are crumbling. The country boasts pristine rainforests which set the scene for the filming of "Jurassic Park," and a laid-back social atmosphere where people can live long and comfortably even if they do not have a lot of money. Prosecutors on Monday arrested a former director-general of the Finance Ministry��s Financial Policy Bureau in connection with the Hyundai Motor corruption scandal. Several Japanese car models have been selling better in Korea than in Japan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a report revealed Sunday. More Honda Accords,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Honda Civics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Toyota Camrys were sold in Korea than in their home country during the first nine months of the year, according to the report by the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association and the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.
Honda sold 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],468 Accords in Korea between January and September with average monthly sales of 163 units, while 1,057 Honda Inspires,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a domestic Accord equivalent model,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], were sold in Japan with average monthly sales of 117 units. The Civic recorded total sales of 595 units with average monthly sales of 66 units in Korea, while only 10 units were sold in Japan during the same period.
The same story goes for Honda CR-V. Some 786 Honda CR-Vs were sold in Korea and 2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],613 in Japan in the first nine months, while the Honda Legend achieved sales of 90 units in Korea and 340 in Japan. When the figures are adjusted to account for the fact that the Korean market is about one third the size of the Japanese one, the sales performance of the CR-V and Legend were about the same in the two countries.
Toyota sold 327 Camrys within just 20 days of its launch in Korea last month, while only 136 units were sold in Japan in September. The Lexus LS460 luxury sedan recorded sales of 562 units in Korea in the first nine months, compared to 1,103 units in Japan. On an adjusted basis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sales of the two models in Korea were double those in Japan.
The reason for the stronger sales performance in Korea is that most of these models are mid-size or large sedans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which appeal to Korean consumers but are unpopular among the Japanese. One by one, the ailments of developed societies are infecting Korea: the ennui, the low birthrate, the obsession with trivia that results from a stable political system and a respectable per-capita income. "I get more excited when I see a pretty pair of shoes than when I watch a performance or visit an art exhibit. Shoes are the highest form of art," says one typical victim of what has been called the End of History. "When I get in a pair of shoes, my chest and back straighten and I feel confident."
"Shoeaholics" are women whose love for shoes outstrips anything else in their lives. Their obsession is encouraged rather than laughed out of existence in iconic cultural products for the terminally shallow like "Sex and the City" and the "Chick Lit" infesting bookstores in the West. Yet it is an archetypal Third-World gargoyle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Philippines' one-time first lady Imelda Marcos, who with her rumored 3,000 pairs of shoes is the most famous victim of the disease. Diplomatic officials say the United Arab Emirates seized a ship earlier this month allegedly carrying North Korean weapons to Iran. The officials said Friday the shipment comes in violation of United Nations sanctions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they said the U.A.E. has reported the seizure to the UN sanctions committee.

The reports about the ship seizure do not suggest it was carrying nuclear weapons. Officials say the cargo included rocket-propelled grenades. Diplomats identified the seized ship as the ANL Australia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], registered in the Bahamas.

The Korea Coast Guard has put out a shark warning to units patrolling the West and South Sea coasts as the predators have been making unusually frequent appearances in these waters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The warning was prompted by the uncommon frequency of shark sightings this year.
